The GoPro HD HERO is designed to be waterproof up to 180’/60m making it perfect for capturing underwater footage at these deep depths, with one small setback…
As many of you may have found, the curved glass factory lens that comes with your HD HERO will cause your pictures and videos to be slightly blurred compared to filming above water. This is caused by the index of refraction which is much different between air and water. Curved glass that has neutral or nearly neutral properties in air may amount to a massive correction underwater.
Rumor has been that GoPro was coming out with a flat underwater lens for their popular HERO camera, but any such accessory has yet to hit the market. Since the release of the HD HERO, we’ve seen many companies come up with their own aftermarket flat lenses or modified housing.
We’ve tried several different models and found that the lenses from Pursuit Diving worked best while maintaining the appearance of your camera’s housing. These are available in two options, one made from polycarbonate and one made from glass. While the glass runs at a premium price, it provides the most superior image quality.
With either option, you’ll be ready to film crystal clear, 1080p HD video and high quality 5MP still photos underwater with your GoPro HERO!
