Upgrade Instructions:

Please read through the instructions carefully to familiarize yourself with new features and how to download and install the new firmware on your ContourROAM.

NOTE: This firmware update is only for the ContourROAM. If you have the ContourHD, ContourGPS or Contour+ please DO NOT download this update.

Installation using Storyteller

The easiest way to update your firmware is by using the free Storyteller application available for Windows or Mac.

Follow these steps to update your firmware using Storyteller: (What if I don't use Storyteller?)

  1. 1. Make sure your microSD Storage Card is correctly formatted. (Instructions on how to format a microSD Storage Card for use in the ContourROAM)

  2. 2. Make sure you do not have the Storyteller application running and that your computer is connected to the Internet.

  3. 3. Plug the ContourROAM camera into your computer using a USB cable. Do not press the Status Button or Slide the Record Slide Switch. Once connected, the Memory LED on the ContourROAM camera will turn red and the ContourROAM camera will appear as an external USB device on your computer.

  4. 4. On a PC, the Storyteller application will launch on your computer. On a Mac, you need to launch the Storyteller application manually.

  5. 5. A dialog box will display asking if you want to upgrade to the latest firmware. Click the ‘Yes’ button.

  6. 6. Storyteller will copy the firmware file to your ContourROAM camera. When the copy is completed, a dialog box will display saying the firmware has been successfully copied to your camera’s memory card. Click the ‘OK’ button.

  7. 7. Properly dismount the camera from your computer. Once dismounted, unplug the camera from your computer.

  8. 8. You are now ready to upgrade the camera's firmware. Simply press and release the Status Button. The camera will beep once. The Memory and Battery LEDs will flash green, and then flash yellow while the update is in progress. When the update is completed the camera will beep twice and shut down.

  9. 9. Optional: Connect the camera to your computer with the USB cable and delete the ContourROAM.bin file from the camera's microSD Storage Card to free up storage space.

Installation without Storyteller

If you cannot connect your ContourROAM camera to Storyteller, follow the steps below to manually update the firmware:

  1. 1. Make sure your microSD Storage Card is correctly formatted. For instructions on how to format a microSD Storage Card for use in the ContourROAM camera see the bottom of this article.

  2. 2. Download the firmware to the desktop.

  3. 3. Plug the ContourROAM camera into your computer using a USB cable. Do not press the Status Button or Slide the Record Slide Switch. Once connected, the Memory LED on the ContourROAM camera will turn red and the ContourROAM camera will appear as an external USB device on your computer.

  4. 4. Open a computer file system window and navigate to the camera which is mounted as an external device on your computer.

  5. 5. Copy the ContourROAM.bin file from your desktop to the root level of the camera’s file system.

  6. 6. Open the file FW_RTC.txt located on your microSD Storage Card. The file may be hidden. Open the file with a Text Editor application. In the fifth line of the file locate the text ‘UPDATE_FW:N’. You need to edit the text to change the ‘N’ to a ‘Y’ so it appears as ‘UPDATE_FW:Y’. Then save the file. This will instruct your ContourROAM camera to update the firmware when it next starts up.

MicroSD Storage Card compatibility and format

ContourROAM is compatible with:

  • SDSC (standard capacity) microSD Cards up to a capacity of 2GB
  • SDHC (high capacity) class 4, 6, or 10 microSD Cards up to a maximum capacity of 32GB

To format your microSD Storage Card follow these steps:

  1. 1. Insert the microSD Card. To remove microSD Card, push card in to release.
  2. 2. Using the end of a pen or paper clip, firmly depress the Format Button (See “J” on page 1 of the User Manual) and hold it down until the LEDs are on.
  3. 3. The Memory Status LED will show yellow throughout the format operation. This should take no longer than 10 seconds.
  4. 4. When the formatting process is complete, the camera will beep twice. The Status LEDs will light and the Memory Status LED will be green, showing the microSD Card is ready.
